“Equity vs. Equality” by Bryce Mergens

May 2, 2023

Equity and equality are often confused, without knowing the true meaning of equity. Equality means that everyone should have an advantage, but the same advantage. We could provide everyone with shoes, specifically the same size and style of flip-flops. Flip-flops aren’t going to work for everyone or every situation, especially if they are all the same size. Each individual person is different, so their advantages and shoes should be different. Equity is about giving each person what they need to have, in order to have the same opportunities and advantages as everyone else.

“Growth Mindset” by Bryce Mergens

May 2, 2023

Growth mindset is the first step to being culturally humble or having cultural humility, an essential trait in a respectable SLP. Growth mindset means that you can put aside your own personal bias and admit that you don’t know everything. It is impossible to know everything, meaning we will make mistakes. If we’re open to new answers and diverse opinions, we can learn from those mistakes. When learning about other cultures, we should be curious and willing to accept the knowledge that people are offering. As we make new discoveries, we can integrate them into what we already know. The flowers growing represent the new things that we learn. As we continue to be educated in various cultures and subjects, the roots grow, combine, and connect with what’s already there.

“The Hmong Qeej” by Justin Moua

May 2, 2023

The Qeej is a Hmong woodwind instrument. It consists of 6 bamboo pipes of different sizes; there are 3 on the left and 3 on the right. The uppermost bamboo pipes have holes on top of the which are covered by the thumb, the middle bamboo holes are played typically covered by the middle, and the bottom bamboo holes are covered by the ring fingers. Not all qeej instruments come in the same size. The size and length of the bamboo pipes are set to have a musical key. For more information, visit the links below.
